Starting after 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, new users of Claude for Education will need to activate their licenses through myapps.microsoft.com before signing on at claude.ai. This change strengthens security and positions us to support future Claude product enhancements. Existing Claude for Education accounts aren't affected.
Please share this information with others in your department as appropriate.
New Activation Steps
- Visit myapps.microsoft.com.
- From the Apps dashboard, select Add Apps, then Request New Apps.
- In the Search by Name field, enter Claude.
- Select Add, then return to the dashboard.
- Allow about an hour for account activation. Then Claude will appear under Pitt Digital Software Distribution Services. Select Claude to log in or go to claude.ai and log in with your Pitt Passport username and password.

Use Only University-Approved GenAI Tools
The University offers enterprise-grade generative AI tools, including Claude, with enhanced privacy and security protections ensuring inputs aren’t used to train models and conversations stay private. GenAI tool use is voluntary but must be limited to tools approved based on data sensitivity. See the University GenAI Approved Tools List and Data Classifications and the Acceptable Use of Generative AI Tools Operating Standard for full guidance.
