Digital Certificate Renewal Changes Begin March 15

Beginning March 15, Pitt-issued Digital Certificates will need to be renewed more frequently — existing certificates won't be affected until they’re renewed. If you manage servers, websites, or applications that use them, please note the following dates and changes:

  • March 15: New certificates will be valid for a maximum of 199 days (approximately 6.5 months), down from one year. Review your renewal calendar and plan for more frequent renewals.
  • May 4 & 15: Technical changes to the certificate trust chain and authentication settings take effect. After these dates, verify that your systems still connect properly.
  • Anytime: If you're not already using automated certificate renewal tools, now is a good time to explore them.

Technical details are available here from Sectigo, InCommon's certificate provider.

InCommon is implementing new certificate requirements that affect all participating institutions. Digital certificates secure campus websites, application servers, and other services that require encrypted connections or identity verification. The University provides these certificates through InCommon.
