Behind the Research: Pitt's GenAI Conversations Study

Before there were any numbers, there were a lot of guesses. Everyone had a theory about how Pitt students were really using generative AI (GenAI) — but a theory isn't research. So a team of Pitt faculty set out to ask, “what do Pitt students really think about GenAI?”

From Speculation to Real Data

What began as one professor's curiosity about her own students turned into a collaborative, interdisciplinary research effort at Pitt, pulling in faculty from across campuses to run focus groups and ask students directly about their AI habits and attitudes.

The Trust Gap Nobody Expected

The number wasn't the most interesting finding. Students described real tension in their relationships with faculty over AI — wondering how their professors were using it, unsure how their peers were using it, and hesitant to talk about any of it openly. That distrust matters: learning happens best in classrooms built on trust and mutual understanding.

Redesigning Courses, Not Just Rules

One piece of advice comes through clearly: a blanket "no AI" policy probably won't hold up. The more effective approach: look closely at how students are actually using these tools, then rethink assignments accordingly. And if a course truly needs to stay AI-free, be intentional about what students do instead and set clear expectations.

Maybe the most encouraging moment came after the focus groups ended, when a student said he wished conversations like these could happen more often. That, more than any statistic, might be the real takeaway.
