As part of a summer-long network modernization initiative that’s nearing completion, the University’s Wi-Fi network names are changing at participating UPMC locations.The next time Pitt affiliates visit one of the following locations, they should connect to Wi-Fi using the new PittNet network name. On Thursday, Sept. 3, the legacy WIRELESS-PITTNET and PITT GUEST WI-FI network names will no longer be available.

Pitt Digital completed a summer-long network modernization initiative that retired the legacy Wireless-Pittnet and Pitt Guest Wi-Fi networks on the Pittsburgh campus on Aug. 12. Faculty, staff and students now connect via PittNet, while visitors use the renamed Pitt Guest network. As part of the effort, the team installed nearly 4,000 new Wi-Fi access points in offices, classrooms and other non-residential spaces, upgraded wired connections, and conducted floor-by-floor building surveys to close coverage gaps.

On Wednesday, Aug. 12, the legacy WIRELESS-PITTNET and PITT GUEST WI-FI network names (SSIDs) will be retired on the Pittsburgh campus. To avoid connection disruptions, individuals on campus before Aug. 12 should update saved Wi-Fi connections on their devices to PittNet (for students, faculty, and staff) or Pitt Guest (for visitors). Those returning to campus after Aug. 12 will simply need to connect using the appropriate network name upon arrival. Eduroam remains unchanged. 

The University’s Enterprise Web Infrastructure (EWI) environment will be retired on August 6, 2027, and websites currently hosted within will need to transition to a new platform before that date. This transition affects anyone who owns or manages a website hosted on EWI.Why We're Modernizing Pitt's Web HostingEWI has served an important function since 2007. As part of ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen Pitt's web infrastructure, Pitt Digital, University Communications and Marketing (UCM), and Pitt Research identified three platforms to replace it.

Pitt Digital is leading a major Network Modernization Initiative, installing nearly 4,000 new Wi-Fi access points across all non-residential Oakland campus buildings to eliminate coverage gaps and dropped connections. The project — described as the largest single deployment of wireless equipment since PittNet was established — involves comprehensive wireless signal surveys, infrastructure upgrades, and compatibility improvements to ensure seamless connectivity as users move throughout buildings.

Campus is a place to connect with professors, students, colleagues — and, of course, Wi-Fi. No matter where you are on campus, you’ll see laptops, tablets, and mobile devices all connected to the same network.

Pitt Digital is supporting the University's Digital Spring Cleaning Challenge, an initiative encouraging faculty and staff to delete unneeded files from OneDrive, SharePoint, and email to reduce Pitt's carbon footprint. Unneeded digital data is estimated to generate 5.8 million metric tons of CO₂ globally each year, and Pitt Digital has published step-by-step guides to help the campus community identify and remove large files from University storage platforms.

Virtually everyone who works at Pitt is connected to, if not dependent on, an elaborate digital network that — in providing myriad services via WiFi or hard-wired internet service — involves a complex infrastructure of specialized equipment and components, multiple provider contracts, and the steadily rising costs of system software licensing, maintenance and replacement costs.

It’s easy to overlook the clutter accumulating in your digital space, but an overabundance of stuff (even digital stuff) can make life harder. Every year, Digital Cleanup Day is a reminder to take our digital clean-up duty seriously, since a messy system can be a huge distraction.

Effective Sunday, Nov. 30, devices running macOS 13 (Ventura) will no longer be able to access University resources through PittNet VPN (Pulse Secure) or Global Protect VPN. 

Pitt has partnered with KeystoneREN to enhance its connectivity with a new 100 Gigabit Internet2 connection. This upgrade supports the University's growing network demands, improves redundancy, and strengthens cloud service connectivity. The initiative aligns with Pitt Digital's commitment to innovation and fiscal responsibility, achieving annual cost savings of $75,000 while advancing research and educational capabilities through a robust and scalable infrastructure.
