The University of Pittsburgh is leading a national milestone by partnering with Anthropic and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to create an AI-enabled Campus of the Future. Through this partnership, Pitt becomes the first university to secure an institution-wide agreement for the state-of-the-art AI model Claude for Education integrated with AWS, which will be deployed across its Pittsburgh and regional campuses. 

Generative AI has been marketed as a magic wand able to do your thinking for you. While it’s possible that some of us would rather automate all their thinking, I started to wonder if this was really the best way to use GenAI. From my experience using the Generative AI @ Pitt tools, it’s far more effective when you (a real person!) are in the driver’s seat doing critical and creative thinking for yourself.

Faculty and staff now have access to PittGPT, powered by CAI, the secure, custom-built platform designed specifically for the University community. One of the biggest advantages to PittGPT is that your conversations and uploaded documents are safe and secure, so you can fearlessly integrate GenAI into your official Pitt business.

Pitt Digital is introducing the University’s first proprietary generative AI tool, PittGPT, powered by CAI, now available to all faculty and staff as part of our Generative AI @ Pitt offerings. Since its rollout in November 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has sparked widespread discussions about its potential impact on education and learning. Recognizing its growing use in academic settings, Pitt IT developed PittGPT, a version tailored specifically for the Pitt community.

Joseph Yun, a research professor of electrical engineering and an architect of PittGPT, said that the university did this because tech companies, like OpenAI, charge a large amount for their enterprise-designed versions.

Pitt Chancellor Joan Gabel and Carnegie Mellon University President Farnam Jahanian celebrated Pittsburgh’s role as an AI Tech Community by signing a ceremonial memorandum of understanding with NVIDIA at AI Horizons Pittsburgh on Oct. 14. The summit included keynote remarks from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, discussing Pittsburgh’s global role in human-first AI innovation.

NVIDIA’s Joint Center with the University of Pittsburgh for AI and Intelligent Systems will focus on computational opportunities across the health sciences, including applications of AI in clinical medicine and biomanufacturing.
