Digital Survival Guide: Software Made Simple

cathedral of learning in phone in doodle style

With the new semester just around the corner, it’s time to get your software set-up started. By the time you collect all your syllabi and set up your study schedule, the last thing you’ll want to think about is how to download Word. But no matter when you choose to set up your software, Pitt Digital has your back.

🔍 Start Here: software.pitt.edu

Before you download anything from a random corner of the internet, check the Software Download Service at software.pitt.edu. Log in with your Pitt credentials, and you’ll find a searchable catalog of nearly 70 titles Pitt already has licensed student use — everything from design software to statistics packages to specialty engineering tools.

📥 Download the Essentials

For regular use, download the desktop version of Microsoft 365. It runs faster than the browser version and can work even if you’re offline. Grab the installer through the Software Download Service for Windows or Mac.

If you just need something quick, you can also search “Microsoft 365” on my.pitt.edu to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook right in your browser — no install required.

🧪 For the Specialists

As a student, your classes cover a wide variety of subjects, some of which require some high-powered software. Pitt Digital provides some of the most popular software to students, but it’s important to know where to find it. If your field has a go-to tool, there’s a good chance it’s already sitting in this catalog.

  • Design & Creative: Adobe Creative Cloud brings you Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Dreamweaver for design, video, and photography work.
  • Engineering & Design: AutoCAD covers 3D design, drafting, and architectural drawing, alongside computational tools like MATLAB and Mathematica.
  • Science & Research: ArcGIS supports mapping and geographic data analysis, BioRender helps you build scientific diagrams and illustrations, and ChemDraw covers molecule drawing and chemistry analysis.
  • Stats & Data: SPSS, JMP, Stata, and SAS are all available for research methods courses, theses, and anything else that calls for serious data work.

And if you’re worried about storage space on your device, check out the Virtual Student Computing Lab. Just log in with your Pitt credentials and access the most popular software you need for your classes completely download-free.

🛡️ Always Check the Software Catalog First

It can be tempting to just grab the first download link that pops up in a search. But third-party sites offering “free” versions of paid software are one of the more common ways malware ends up on a device — sometimes disguised as the exact program you were trying to install in the first place.

Everything in the Software Download Service has already been vetted by Pitt Digital, so you can install it without wondering what else might be tagging along. One login, and you know it's the real thing.

💻 What About the Pitt App Center?

The Pitt App Center, found at my.pitt.edu, is your one-stop shop for University-related apps you can access directly from your browser. The right app can make your life at Pitt easier, but tracking it down isn't always simple — that's what the App Center is for. Browse it and you'll find things like Canvas for your coursework, LinkedIn Learning for building new skills, DocuSign for signing documents electronically, and mobile versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive.

📚 Software, Sorted

You don’t need to hunt down a separate subscription or rely on free trials that expire before you can finish your projects. Pitt Digital has already done the work of getting these tools into your hands — all that’s left is downloading and using them.
