Generative AI @ Pitt

Why Use University-Approved Tools?

The University provides access to enterprise-grade generative AI tools with enhanced privacy and security protections. Each tool offers different strengths — explore your options and find what fits your workflow. Using these tools is voluntary, but understanding the AI landscape helps you explore what's possible while keeping yourself and your data protected.

  • Your data won't train AI models: Inputs remain private and are not used for model training.
  • Enterprise protections: University agreements ensure contractual security and privacy safeguards.
  • Conversations are private: Administrators only see anonymized, aggregate usage statistics.
  • Regulatory compliance: Most tools support FERPA, GLBA, and HIPAA data. See Approved AI Tools for details.

All GenAI tools can make mistakes. Always verify important information, use your own judgment, and follow the University's Acceptable Use of Generative AI Tools Operating Standard.

Available GenAI Tools

Always log in to the AI tools using Pitt Passport Single Sign-On with your Pitt username and password to ensure you're using the secure, University-approved versions.

Additional Approved Tools

Also approved for restricted data: Copilot In-App (within M365 apps), Microsoft Teams Premium, and Zoom AI Companion. No tools are approved for NIST 800-171 (CUI) or PCI DSS (payment card) data. See Approved AI Tools for the complete list.

⚠️ Important: Only AI tools accessed through Pitt Passport are approved for private or restricted University data. Public AI services — including Microsoft Copilot for Web (copilot.microsoft.com), ChatGPT, and others — are not approved for sensitive data.
