What are Pitt students actually saying about AI? A faculty research team spent the spring of 2025 finding out — and Pitt Digital was proud to support their work.
GenAI Conversations: Student Use of Generative AI at Pitt brought together 95 undergraduates across Pitt’s Oakland, Greensburg, Bradford, and Johnstown campuses for honest focus group conversations about how they use generative AI, what worries them, and what they need from the University. Here’s a snapshot of what they found:
- Over 90% of students use GenAI tools — including in courses where it's banned.
- Students often feel as if they’re more comfortable with AI than their instructors are.
- Many carry real ethical concerns about privacy, academic integrity, and the environment.
- Most want clearer guidance from the University — not a ban, not a free pass.
The video features the researchers who led this work. We’re grateful to lead researcher Annette Vee, associate professor of English and faculty liaison for AI enablement for Pitt Digital, her faculty co-researchers across all four Pitt campuses, and our own Office of the CIO for their commitment to listening to student voices.
