Integrating AI Responsibly: Pitt's Commitment to Sustainability

The University of Pittsburgh is committed to responsible innovation — integrating advanced AI technologies through Generative AI @ Pitt while driving toward carbon neutrality by 2037, as outlined in the Pitt Sustainability Plan. Rather than training new AI models from scratch — an energy-intensive process — our strategy focuses on using existing, pre-trained models, which require significantly less energy. 

That said, a single GenAI prompt uses roughly 10 times the energy of an internet search. Complex prompts can use up to 9 times more energy than simple ones, which is why thoughtful use of AI matters.

Core Commitments & Sustainable Practices

These principles guide our deployment of GenAI @ Pitt:

GenAI @ Pitt tools are designed with sustainability in mind. Our platforms use pre-trained models through partners like Azure AI Foundry and AWS. This strategy significantly reduces model life cycle energy consumption compared to training models from scratch. Most GenAI @ Pitt services are powered by renewable electricity.

The University actively monitors the environmental footprint of our GenAI offerings to ensure they align with our climate goals, ensuring ongoing dialogue about technological advancement and environmental responsibility.

Strategic partnerships with vendors like Anthropic, AWS, Google, and Microsoft are based on multiple factors: 

  • Their commitments to renewable energy and carbon reduction 
  • Responsible AI development practices 
  • In the case of Anthropic's Claude for Education, a focus on AI safety with guardrails designed for educational contexts 

This approach supports Pitt's Sustainability and Climate Action Plans.

Our AI tools are hosted in the cloud and fall outside the University’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory boundary. Even so, sustainability and safety criteria guide our decision-making.

Beyond managing our own digital footprint, Pitt is focused on AI’s transformative potential. Pitt researchers are showcasing how AI can contribute to environmental goals through Responsible Data Science and projects like designing more sustainable concrete.

What You Can Do

GenAI @ Pitt tools are designed to complement your learning and work, not replace critical thinking. Every prompt has an environmental footprint, and small choices add up. 

Here's how you can use AI thoughtfully:

  1. Be deliberate with your prompts. 

    Clear, specific prompts reduce wasted computing resources. Avoid vague requests that require multiple follow-ups.

  2. Use the right tool for the task. 

    A calculator is better for simple math. A search engine may be faster for quick facts. GenAI shines for brainstorming, drafting, analysis, and complex problem solving. 

  3. Avoid generating content you won't use. 

    If you're producing AI-draft after draft that gets discarded, you’re consuming energy without benefit.

  4. Make it count. 

    When you use GenAI effectively, you have the potential to save far more energy than you’ve used through streamlined communication, faster research, and more efficient workflows.
