While Pitt Digital works to continually strengthen University safeguards, the vigilance of everyone in the University community is crucial in defending against cyberattacks. Here’s how you can help:
1. Complete Your Annual Security Training
An increase in the number and sophistication of cybersecurity threats means online cybersecurity training is mandatory for all students, faculty, and staff each year.
If you haven’t already done so, search for “security training” on myPitt to complete the training.
2. Only Approve Authentication Requests That You Initiated
Duo Multifactor Authentication provides a second layer of security to your Pitt account, requiring both your password and a secondary approval method.
Be vigilant; uninitiated Duo requests may indicate an attempted security breach.
3. Use Unique Passwords and Enable Multifactor Authentication
Your University account is protected by Duo, but you should also enable multifactor authentication on all other accounts where you have the option.
Create a strong, unique password specifically for Pitt Passport and different passwords for all other accounts to enhance security.
4. Know How to Spot and Report Phishing Scams
Phishing scams often contain typos, create a sense of urgency, request sensitive data, or come from unrecognized senders. They may also use generic greetings and ask you to reply using personal email accounts.
Help protect others by reporting suspicious messages using the built-in Report button in Outlook. If you don’t have Outlook, you can forward suspicious messages as an attachment to phish@pitt.edu.
5. Keep Your Browsers and Software Updated
Regularly update your browsers, apps and operating system to maintain security.
