Health Sciences and Medical Innovation Hub

Pitt IT, in partnership with Dell technologies, is creating the IT infrastructure to establish Pittsburgh as the epicenter for computationally enabled health sciences. The Health Sciences and Medical Innovation Hub is a transformative collaboration of the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, Carnegie Mellon University, and Dell to accelerate the translation of research into tangible benefits for humankind. The Hub uses technology to advance research on health initiatives that will contribute to Dell’s moonshot goal of positively impacting 1 billion people by 2030. Initial projects include research to combat breast cancer and support for the Cellular Senescence Network (SenNet).

Cloud Innovation Center, Powered by AWS

The University of Pittsburgh and AWS recently launched a new Cloud Innovation Center (CIC), an innovative partnership between the University and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Powered by AWS, our CIC is the first of its kind in the Eastern U.S. and only the third in the nation. Our transformative partnership with AWS combines Pitt’s leadership in the health sciences and athletics with AWS's powerful machine learning and AI services to enable student interns to solve real-world, data-focused challenges. Our CIC interns also benefit from AWS's world class training and resources.

Alignment with University Strategy

The Horizon is fully aligned with IT’s role in supporting the goals outlined in the University's Plan for Pitt, led by Chancellor Gabel. It also looks further into the future state of the University’s evolving digital needs.

Priorities

Some of the priorities we explore include creating personalized learning pathways through AI and analytics, improving broadband access and digital literacy, adopting transformative technologies to advance research, supporting workforce development, and positioning Pittsburgh as the epicenter for computationally enabled health sciences.

Project Timeline

The IT 10-Year Horizon features three phases. It will last through spring 2025 and include all schools, centers, and campuses.

Phases

We expect this effort to last through spring 2025 and include administrators, faculty, students, staff, researchers, governance groups, community stakeholders, regional contacts, and vendor partners. It features three phases:

Phase 1: Discovery & Visioning

Phase 1 focused on gathering perspectives from a broad and diverse array of University stakeholders. We solicited feedback about opportunities, challenges, and barriers that the University faces as an institution and specifically related to the future of digital technology and how it can help advance the institution's goals. The data we collected informed the development of the high-level IT strategic pillars and goals.

Phase 2: Strategic Choice & Design

Phase 2 focused on refining the elements of the Horizon, taking into consideration reasonable expectations of resources to realistically achieve the strategic goals and initiatives. The conclusion of this phase was marked by the production of the Horizon.

Phase 3: Refine and Finalize (In Progress)

In Phase 3, we will focus on refining the draft Horizon into its final form by socializing it with the entire University community and collecting feedback.
